This is to be achieved through the provision of integrated networks with high-performance distributed computing resources and associated services that permit the processing of very large amounts of data and information through extensive virtualisation of resource and data management.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF) is sponsoring an integration project and a number of community projects from various disciplines in order to implement this. The purpose of the integration project is to record the developments of the community projects, generalise them and integrate them into the general D-Grid platform.
